Integrating Visualization Software into Learning Objects

Jens Peter Traff

AbstractIn this project we will develop a framework for integrating visualization into learning objects, such that animations and explanatory text can be shown simultaneously. We will in this project focus on Jeliot, a system that visualizes and animates Java programs. Our primary goal is to fi nd out if it is feasible to do this kind of integration. First we will describe what is understood by a learning object, why a framework would be bene ficial, which features are crucial and how we will achieve them. Then we will present the model of the program, making up the core of the framework. This is the part that handles all manipulation of the actual learning object. We will discuss various choices made to create the best possible program. We will then proceed to present and discuss the user interaction. Which will be how he/she will experience a learning object designed for this system. A complete user guide can be found in the appendix. Finally we will discuss how much work goes into creating learning objects for this framework, how the framework will be distributed and how we can improve the framework in the future. This will include minor improvements, and integration of di fferent concepts.
