Drupal is a well-known open source framework for building content rich and customizable websites. It is in use at many organizations and has a large eco system of developers, users and plugins. It does not, however, currently support collaborative development projects well. The current open source state-of-the-art when it comes to collaborative development is FusionForge which is a fork of a version of the SourceForge software.
The project is to either i) extend Drupal and FusionForge so that sites can designed where both systems are seamlessly integrated; or ii) design a set of plug-ins to Drupal which allow Drupal to provide the same functionality as FusionForge.
Both Drupal and FusionForge are developed in PHP and rely on many different servers such as MySQL.
