Mobile phones, Playstation 3's and many other electronic systems are implemented as heterogeneous multiprocessor systems. They are often implemented on a single chip using pre-designed "components", and the communication infrastructure represents a significant challenge to the designer. Some of the issues to consider are: (i) bus vs. network topology, (ii) bandwidth and latency requirements, (iii) memory consistency model.
The goal of the project is to implement a multiprocessor in a FPGA, and to implement a suitable application, in order to demonstrate the operation of the system. Specific details - including the balance between hardware and software focus - are defined within the project.
