Databar FAQ

Databar FAQ

This document answers the most frequently asked questions about the databars used in the course 02501 - Fall 2001.

The databars currently used is building 306/30+39 and 308/14+15.

Q: How do I bring up a terminal window (correctly)

A: Press the middle mousebutton and select Terminals->Terminal on Bohr or Terminals->Terminal on Erlang. Then execute the command ~g8817/start. This should be done every time a new terminal is started.
Notice that only Bohr and Erlang can be used in 02501. The exercises will not run on either Gauss, Newton or Ray1-5.

Q: Is there a more thorough introduction to Matlab?

A: Yes. Try the MatLab Primer by Kermit Sigmon [ 2nd ed. html | 3rd ed. pdf ]

Q: Why is Matlab so sloooow?

A: Sometimes the databar is heavily loaded. Try to run Matlab without the Java interface by typing matlab -nojvm. This will also fix the arrow-key problem (described below).

Alternatively, you could try to run the old version of matlab by typing matlab53 instead. This runs in the terminal window and consumes less resources.

Q: Is the arrow-keys not working in Matlab?

A: On the Sun-terminals Matlab don't react very well to the ordinary arrwo-keys on your keyboard. But try to press numlock and use the keys on the numeric keyboard instead.

Alternatively, you could run Matlab without the Java interface by typing matlab -nojvm.

Q: How do I open a .zip-file?

A: Write unzip <filename> in a terminal window - e.g. unzip warping.zip.

Q: How do I view PDF files?

A: Bring up a terminal window using the middle mousebutton and write acroread <filename>, e.g. acroread introduction.pdf.

Q: How do I print PDF files in building 306/38?

A:
In 306: Select File->Print in the Acrobat PDF viewer and add " -dgps1-306" to the lp command.

In 308: Select File->Print in the Acrobat PDF viewer and add " -dgps1-308" or " -dgps2-306" to the lp command.
