Physically-based Animation as Used in the Computer Game Hitman

Thomas Jakobsen IO Interactive

In IO Interactive's series of Hitman games, and also the soon coming "Freedom: Soldiers of Liberty", realism is enhanced by the use of interactive physical simulation. A common framework that was developed in-house handles both hair, cloth, rigid bodies, and falling people ("rag dolls"). The method borrows techniques from the area of molecular dynamics, and although sometimes less accurate, its implementation is both faster, simpler, and more stable than traditional approaches. It also lends itself to implementation in vertex shaders and the VU units on PlayStation 2.

The talk explains some of the algorithmic details behind the simulation and shows some interactive examples. If time permits, work in progress related to the simulation of gas and fluids will also be demonstrated and discussed briefly.
