Examination: Course work (ca. 50%) + written exam (ca. 50%).

Text book: W. R. Cheswick, S. M. Bellovin and A. D. Rubin:
"Firewalls and Internet Security", 2nd edition,
Addison-Wesley, 2003.
Lecturers:
Robin Sharp (RIS),
Building 322, Room 210 (responsible teacher)
and guest lecturers.
Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide a working knowledge
of network security in theory and practice.
The course contents include: Basic network security in LAN and
WAN environments; protocols for client-server communication in
high-risk environments; secure communications to ensure
confidentiality, authenticity and integrity; security
architecture (firewalls and DMZs, VLAN and VPN); proxies;
intrusion detection and protection systems; audit and analysis
of attacks; security policies and their management.
Course Format
The course is given as a combination of lectures, given by the
course lecturers and invited speakers, exercises and practical
laboratory work.
Lectures
Lectures will be based on the text book by
Cheswick, Bellovin and Rubin: "Firewalls and Internet
Security", 2nd edition, Addison-Wesley, 2003,
together with selected articles from the literature, which
will be obtainable via the Web.
Laboratory Work
The lab work consists of three small mandatory assignments,
which will be run from the databars.
These assignments are designed to provide hands-on experience
with some important techniques in network security and will
typically involve some analysis and the use of practical
tools. The assignments are to be documented by a small
report (4-8 pages).
