Project No. 0142:  Google Loon - balloon-powered internet for everyone
Aktuelle Tidligere

Description:

Google have launched their Loon project, with the aim to create a balloon-powered internet for everyone! The idea is to create a network of balloons travelling on the edge of space (20 km above the Earth), designed to connect people in rural and remote areas - two-thirds of the world's population is still without access to the internet!

The balloons are carried around the Earth by winds. In the stratosphere, winds are generally steady and slow, and each layer of wind varies in direction and magnitude. This means that moving each balloon up or down can control its position, and hence, ensure that balloon-to-balloon communication will create a connected network.

Each balloon is equipped with a computer, GPS, balloon-to-balloon communication, and balloon-to-ground communication (covering an area of about 40 km in diameter). All of this is powered by solar panels.

In this project you will explore the idea of the loon project, by developing a simulator that is able to capture the movements of a number of balloons. You should develop a simple GUI, which can animate the movements of a set of balloons. A central part of the project is to develop a simple control algorithm, which based on its position (GPS), speed and direction, as well as information from neighboring balloons, decides whether the balloon should stay in its current wind layer or move up or down to another layer. We're quite excited about Python, which is fun and easy to learn, but any programming language is fine. You can choose if you want to write the thesis in Danish or English.
