Project No. 0125:  iRewrite - automated advice for writing and rewriting scientific and technical documents
Aktuelle Tidligere

Description:

External and internal spell-checkers (like ispell/aspell and spell-checking in Microsoft Word, respectively) are ubiquitous. Grammar-checkers, less-so. And good style checkers are a rarity. The goal of this project is to write a style-checker that works specifically for scientific and technical documents, a kind of ïspell for style", which codifies the rules inherent in good scientific writing that we must all learn and use. Some of these rules come from classic books (like Strunk & White [1]), others are folklore, and still others are part of a given community's style and lexicon. Were such a tool, we'll call it 'iRewrite', publicly available, it would not only be a huge boon to uncountably many undergraduate and graduate students the world-over, but would be used daily by thousands of scientists and engineers to take care of the simpler aspects of style in their papers, books, documentation, and reports. This project will use computational linguistics, as realized in an existing software systems (the GF grammatical framework [2]), to codify the style rules of technical writing to produce an Open Source ïRewrite".
