Project No. 0074:  Facial symmetry analysis
Aktuelle Tidligere

Description:

Most human faces are slightly asymmetric. However, people who have undergone facial symmetry often suffer from larger asymmetries. In fact, one of the major goals of reconstructive surgery is to restore facial symmetry. An example is the creation and insertion of eye prosthesis for people who by accident or disease has lost an eye. The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate methods to quantify facial symmetry. The data for the project consists of high-quality 3D surface scans of human heads. It is also possible to use a state-of-the-art scanner to create new data. A few scans of people who have undergone surgery is also available. From a statistical point of view it could be very interesting to learn what the normal asymmetry of human faces is and use that in the evaluation of surgery outcome.

The project can potentially be done using Matlab. However, most advanced 3D toolkits are based on C++. Knowledge of image analysis or computer graphics is required. An existing tool called Sumatra is available. It can be used to view and manipulate 3D surfaces. Parts of the project can be performed using Sumatra.

Prerequisites:  Knowledge of image analysis or computer graphics.
Knowledge of Matlab or C++.
