Flexibility
Ling Feng comes from the city of Tianjin only 120 kilometres from Beijing. She studied at Beijing University of Technology (formerly known as Beijing Polytechnic University) before she arrived to Denmark in 2002 to finish her Master thesis. She originally started at another DTU department, MIC but decided to continue at IMM inspired by the course Non-Linear Signal Processing taught by Professor Lars Kai Hansen.
- "This course was the main reason that you chose to do your Master thesis at IMM?"
"Yes I became very interested in non-linear signal processing and talked to Lars Kai about the possibilities. Luckily the Master program at MIC is very flexible and I could choose between courses within many DTU departments so it caused no problem to jump to IMM."
- "Flexibility is one of the advantages here at DTU?"
"It certainly makes it possible to build up your academic portfolio according to your interests. The study environment is also quite attractive. A particularly good idea here at IMM is that all the Master students are working in the same project room. This gives us a unique opportunity to get in contact with each other and makes it easy to exchange view points and to discuss our work."
- "How did you originally became aware of Denmark and DTU as a potential study option?"
"During the fourth year of my Bachelor program Beijing Polytechnic University started its official co-operation with DTU so a lot of information about DTU became available. At that time we furthermore didn't have to pay tuition fee so if you considered going abroad DTU was a natural choice. With some economical support from my family it was suddenly a possibility for me to go to Denmark."
- "What about finding accommodation and other practicalities?"
"Getting a place to live was not difficult. Before I arrived I got information on how to apply for accommodation and I got a room at the Campus Village. Getting an attractive place to live is however much more difficult. I stayed at the Campus Village the first 6 months because in the beginning there is not enough time to look for alternatives and you have to adjust to both a new environment and to the teaching. This year many more international students will arrive and there are probably going to be some shortage of accommodation.
- "And your plans for the future?"
"I did my Master thesis on speech recognition and I have continued within this line of work. I hope to continue my scientific carrier after my Ph.D. but I have not yet decided how or where. Now I'm happy to work on my Ph.D. focusing on signal processing and sound."
